The Power of Now: By Eckhart Tolle

Here at The Toasty Avocados, we try not to take ourselves too seriously. But every now and then we do think it’s important to press the pause button, sit down for a hot minute, and take a good hard look at the areas of our lives that could use a lil' love. If you're into that kind of thing, say hello to Eckhart Tolle's #1 New York Times Bestseller, The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment.

In his book, Tolle gets up close and personal with the ego and how it affects how we react and interact with other people. He explores the concept of letting go of thoughts that reside in the past and future and instead urges readers to focus on being absolutely present (any yogis out there will appreciate this!). Tolle argues that all pain, anxiety, and negativity are rooted outside of the present moment. He discusses how living fully and completely in the "now" will lead to a more joyous, enlightened, and peaceful life. (I know, I know, hearts and sparkles and rainbow unicorns... Just stick with me.)

Okay, so if I’m being completely honest, the book is a little self-helpy and new-agey, but the lessons you'll be able to take away are well worth getting through the occasional fluff. Now, you may not be into spiritual shenanigans or trying to align your energy to the universal flow of Mother Earth and all that jazz. And you just might think that all that hippy-dippy ish is a bunch of crock. That’s okay. Even if you aren’t quite sure where you stand with all of that (heck, we’re not so sure ourselves!), we can at least all agree on one thing: Stress is a b*tch...and we’ve all got it. If for no other reason, you should read this book simply for life-changing advice, tools, and tips on stress management. Trust me. Everyone—that guy who cut you off in traffic, your boss asking about that big project minutes before the deadline, and your boyfriend caught in the midst of your raging hormones right before your period—will all come back to thank you.

While The Power of Now was published back in the late 1990s, it has gained traction in recent years and has been endorsed by the likes of Oprah and Deepak Chopra. Oh, and as a casual side note, it's been translated into 33 languages. Yep, 33. So, it’s kind of a thing.

All in all, it gets down and dirty with consciousness, philosophy, and meditation—in the most completely non-boring and fascinating way possible that will sort of make your mind explode a little. So if you’re into being more aware of yourself as a human being, more in touch with your emotions, understanding why humans react and interact the way they do, and just becoming a better version of yourself (if you answered no to any or all of those, I suggest you go eat a snickers and/or take a Midol and then come back to this paragraph), then this book is for you. Check it out on Amazon, peeps, and let’s start spreading some more positive vibes in the universe!

P.s. If you’ve already read The Power of Now and liked it, I highly recommend New Earth: Awakening To Your Life's Purpose (also by Eckhart Tolle). It dives deeper into the same themes, so it’s a great book to follow-up with. Happy reading, friends!
